Constitution Place

Located in the city's centre, Constitution Place is a state-of-the-art commercial and government precinct that has transformed Canberra's urban landscape and set a new standard from an architectural and environmental perspective for all future city developments.

With a footprint measuring a total of 80,000m², Constitution Place consists of two multi-level buildings and a three-level underground basement carpark and end of trip facility. Designed to contribute positively to the city's environment, Constitution Place is one of the first gold-rated WELLs and 5-star NABERS energy-rated precincts in Canberra. 

The overall design of the development was inspired by American architect Walter Burley Griffin's design for the city, featuring geometric circular and triangular shapes that are unique to Griffin's design and Canberra throughout. 

Griffin's design was selected in 1912 as the winning submission in an international competition organised by the government to find a design for the nation's new capital and continues to influence the city to this day.

Located on the corner of Constitution Avenue and London Circuit, the first building is a 12-storey mixed-use commercial and hotel complex. 

The building was designed as two stacked volumes, reducing the size of its footprint whilst its triangular floor plan and orientation maximises exposure to natural light.

Levels 6 through to 12 feature a series of commercial office spaces home to companies such as KPMG, Minter Ellison and King Wood Mallesons whilst another 4 floors are occupied by the 5-star premium A by Adina Hotel and its 130 apartments. 

Designed to command a strong presence on Constitution Avenue, the second building in the development forms the headquarters for the ACT Government.

The structure features a dynamic exterior clad with off-white precast façades, referencing the style of the civic buildings of Canberra's famous Parliamentary Triangle.

A key element in the building's structure is the way in which its floorplates were designed. Presenting as three volumes, differing façade strategies were utilised, responding in accordance to each volume's context as well as its solar orientation.

Internally, the government building features three multi-level open-plan workplace wings.

Each wing is arranged around a central atrium comprised of three circles linked by concave arcs to form a large sinuous void. Workspace floors are accessed via curved glazed lifts or via the spectacular central spiral staircase.

The building's unique internal layout results in an interesting interior whilst creating dynamic workspaces that promote and maximise employee wellbeing. 

In addition to its two impressive buildings, a defining element of Constitution Place's urban design is the way in which it contributes to Canberra's public life via a network of public spaces situated throughout the precinct.

Some of the city's best retail and hospitality tenancies are located along a laneway that runs between the two buildings, whilst Pocket Square and Legislative Plaza provide workers and the public with outdoor gathering spaces. 

Utilising key architectural elements throughout its design, Constitution Place has transformed Canberra's civic centre, bringing the city and its people together in one multipurpose state-of-the-art development.
